PRINCETON, N.J. – A big eight-run second inning helped power the Brown baseball team to a 11-4 victory over Princeton in Sunday's season finale, giving the Bears a series win over the Tigers by taking two out of three in the weekend series.
For the third time in as many games in the series, eight of Brown's nine starters reached base. Freshman Mark Henshon went 3-for-5 with a career-high four RBIs and a run scored. Senior Ray Sass reached base three times, scored twice and had two RBIs. Senior Derian Morphew had two hits, a walk and scored twice.
On the mound, freshman Dylan Reid got the start and gave up four runs (one earned) through five innings with three strikeouts. Sophomore Jacob Young retired the one batter he faced in relief, sophomore Jack Seppings fired 1.2 scoreless innings and senior Bobby Olsen tossed 2.0 hitless innings of relief with four strikeouts to finish off the win.
Much of the scoring came in the first two innings, with Brown jumping on top 1-0 in the top of the first following a leadoff double by Morphew and a sac fly from DJ Dillehay.
Princeton came back with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first, scoring one run on a throwing error and two more on a two-out single.
Brown didn't stay behind for long, answering right back by tying their season-high with eight runs in the top of the second inning on four hits while sending 13 men to the plate. With one out, Conor Cooke scored on a wild pitch and Henshon put Brown back in front moments later with a two-run single up the middle. Brown reloaded the bases with two outs and plated five more runs in the inning with Jacob Burley and Cooke drawing bases loading walks to make it 6-3.
After a pitching change, Sass followed with a two-run single and Nathan Brasher added an RBI single of his own to push the lead to 9-3.
Princeton got one run back in the bottom of the second inning, starting the frame with back-to-back doubles.
Brown added on single runs in both the fifth and ninth innings, both coming courtesy of Henshon, who singled home Brasher with a one-out single in the fifth, and plated Sass with an RBI fielder's choice in the ninth.
The Bears finish the 2023 season 12-26 overall and 9-12 in Ivy League play, finishing sixth in the Ivy standings.
