BOSTON – The Brown men's crew team retained the Michalson Cup with a win over Boston University in the First Varsity 8 race on the Charles River on Saturday.
"The team had a strong performance for their first race of the season," said Paul Cooke, Men's Crew Head Coaching Chair. "The Charles River was rough, with a strong tailwind and choppy waters and all the crews that raced were challenged by the conditions."
The Bears earned the win in the 1V8 race with a time of 5:46.6, ahead of BU's time of 5:48.3.
"The Varsity was able to take the lead early and handle the rough water in the second 1000 meters," said Cooke. "They kept their composure through the finish line and secured an important victory. We also had very strong showings in the 2nd and 3rd Varsity."
Brown earned wins in both the Second Varsity 8 and the Third Varsity 8 races against the Terriers. In the 2V8 race, Brown finished 10 seconds ahead of the Terriers with a time of 5:49.3 to 5:59.3. The Bears also earned a big win the 3V8 race with a time of 5:53.2 to Boston University's time of 6:02.2
Boston earned a close win in the 4V8 race with the Terriers (5:59.9) just edging out the Bears (6:01.1).
