SARASOTA, Fla. – Brown men's crew team earned a win in the 2V8 race against Yale and Washington at the IRA Sarasota Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park on Saturday.
Racing at a World Class venue, the Nathan Benderson Park, at this early point in the season against Washington and Yale was so valuable," said Paul Cooke '89, Men's Crew Head Coaching Chair. "The standard of racing was very high through all four events."
The win for the Bears in the Second Varsity 8 race came as Brown finished with a time of 5:33.19. Brown won the event by more than three seconds over second-place Washington.
Yale won the Varsity 8 race with a time of 5:27.90, as Brown took third with a time of 5:34.08. Brown also finished third in the Third Varsity 8 race with a time of 5:39.64, a race won by Washington.
"The Varsity was fast in the first 1000m and challenged for the lead but they paid a price and weren't able to get the most out of their effort," said Cooke. "They can execute better and we anticipate continued improvement in the coming weeks."
In the Fourth Varsity 8 race, Yale finished first with a time of 5:45.19, followed by Brown in a time of 5:50.32. The Bears' "B" boat in the race finished with a time of 6:03.88.
"As a full squad, it was our best performance against these two outstanding programs in recent years," said Cooke. "They 2nd Varsity especially had a terrific race and earned the win. Assistant Coaches Rufus BIggs and Scott Cockle have been effective in building a full squad. Each boat pushes the others in practices and each person contributes to the success of the program."
