SHELTON, Conn. - Brown men's crew kicked off the fall portion of their schedule this morning at Indian Well State Park, competing in the Head of the Housatonic regatta. The 2025-26 Bears made as strong of a first impression as possible, with Brown's "A" boat winning the HVA Cup after crossing the finish line in 12:32.012.
Brown's "B" boat finished in third place with a final time of 12:44.969, while the "C" boat took home a seventh place finish with a time of 13:00.844. Bruno's "D" boat secured an eleventh place finish after crossing the finish line in 13:15.174, capping off a strong day for the Bears program. This is the second year in a row that the Bears have had two boats place in the top three at the Head of the Housatonic, with Brown's "A" (12:33.1) and "B" (12:45.7) boats coming in second and third place last season to Yale (12:29.1).
With several boats finishing in the top seven, the Bears are poised to remain among the top crew programs in the IRA. Men's Crew Norman W. Alpert '80 Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89 spoke about the work that his athletes and coaching staff have put in to prepare for this morning's competition.
"The crews raced well today. We've had a big group of athletes come back ready to take on the challenges of a new year and a new team," said Cooke. " They have stepped up from day one and the results today are their reward for showing up the way they did and putting in the work." Cooke continued, "I'm really pleased by the way Rufus Biggs and Nick Peterson have helped build the new squad. Our seniors have shown good leadership."
The Bears will have a week to prepare for the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Massachusetts next weekend, where they'll be on the water Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 18-19).
