NEW YORK – Brown softball (3-11, 1-2 Ivy) dropped its series finale to Columbia (5-11, 2-1 Ivy), 5-3, losing in heartbreaking fashion on a walkoff home run.
The Bears finished the game with nine hits, with Laurel Moody, Dara English and Vanessa Alexander all collecting two each. The Bears left six runners on base.
Brown got a solid outing from starter Alexis Guevara, who allowed three runs on six hits in 3.2 innings pitched with three strikeouts. Annie Finch () took the loss in relief but threw three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three, before the walkoff home run in the seventh.
The scoring started early for Brown with English and Rodriguez singling before a stellar at bat by Meghan Gormley drove in a run. Gormley fouled off five-straight pitched before hitting a single right past third base to bring home Brown's first run.
After Columbia tied the game in the bottom of the inning, Brown bounced back with a two-out single by Moody that scored Alexander and Jasmine Hsiao, each of whom had singled earlier in the inning.
Columbia tied the game with runs in the second and fourth innings as Brown's offense cooled. The Bears managed just one hit from the third inning on and only had two baserunners for the rest of the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, a one-out single but the winning run on for Columbia. A groundout moved the runner to second but on the first pitch of the next at bat a two-run home run to left center ended the game.
