Men's Hockey Falls to #10 Cornell in ECAC Play
11/4/2023 10:36:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The tenth-ranked Cornell Big Red (4-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC) pulled away from the Brown Bears (2-2-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) in the third period to take a 7-1 conference win Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
With the loss, Brown settles for the weekend split after last night's win over Colgate.
"The positive is we learn lessons – when you play a team that I think can contend for a National Championship, you have to be consistent for three periods," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We were good for the first, we battled them tooth and nail. They turned it up in the second and unfortunately, we didn't match their energy.
"A loss is a loss whether it's by a 7-1 score or a 1-0 score. That being said, we can play a lot better and there's consistency we need throughout. It doesn't get any easier, we go on the road on a tough trip to defending-National Champion Quinnipiac and then to Princeton, which is always a tough place to play and they have a very good hockey team. We have to turn around quickly, solve some of our ails, and we'll be better on Friday, that's for sure."
Brown and Cornell were scoreless through 20 minutes with seven shots on either side of the ice. Both teams had one power play chance in the frame.
Jonathan Castagna and Gabriel Seger struck for the Big Red at 1:45 and 6:37 of the second period to give Cornell a 2-0 lead. Kyle Penney made it 3-0 Big Red at 7:18 of the frame.
The Bears struck on the power play as Ryan St. Louis tallied his fifth goal of the season with assists credited to Max Scott and Ethan Mistry. Mistry's initial shot was turned aside by Cornell goaltender Ian Shane (15 saves), but Scott moved the loose puck to St. Louis on the post for the power play marker.
George Fegaras extended Cornell's lead to 4-1 at 14:14 of the second period.
The Big Red pushed the score to 7-1 in the third as Seger, Luke Devlin, and Ryan Walsh found the back of the net. The latter two goals came in the final two minutes of the game.
