Men's Hockey Falls to Clarkson in Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Clarkson Golden Knights (5-5-0, 2-1-0 ECAC) scored 1:12 into overtime to hand the Brown Bears (2-5-0, 1-5-0 ECAC) its second straight overtime loss, taking a 3-2 win Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"I think we have a really good hockey team; I thought we out-played that team from start to finish," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It's absolutely ludicrous we decide hockey games with a 3-on-3 skills competition after playing 60 minutes of 5-on-5. It's not hockey. We absolutely need to find a way to be better in those situations, but the fact that we get a loss, our third one, for a 3-on-3 game is dumb.
"I don't agree with it and I'm going to battle to never see it again after this year. We play too hard to lose games 3-on-3. Again, we have to be better in those situations, but we were the better team for the second game in a row. We need to find ways to extend leads – but again I think we have a good hockey team, I like us, we'll get better."
Jordan Tonelli re-directed a shot from Alex Pineau 14:48 into the first period to beat Clarkson goaltender Austin Roden (26 saves) to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Pineau and Brett Bliss picked up the assists on Tonelli's second goal of the season.
Lawton Zacher (19 saves) returned from injury and made a breakaway save on Ayrton Martino early in the second period to keep the Bears ahead by a goal.
The Golden Knights evened the score at 8:17 of the second period as Ryan Taylor finished the feed from Trey Taylor.
George Grannis gave Clarkson a 2-1 lead seven minutes into the third period with assists going to Erik Bargholtz and Jesse Tucker.
Just 17 seconds later, Ryan St. Louis ripped a shot past Roden to tie the game with his seventh goal of the season. Ryan Bottrill forced a Clarkson turnover and moved the puck to Max Scott, who found St. Louis driving to the net with space.
Both teams had multiple power play chances before the end of regulation to find a winner, but neither team scored, sending the game to overtime.
Ryan Richardson's first shot was blocked in overtime, but he found the loose puck and the second effort beat Zacher to give Clarkson the win.
