Men’s Hockey Beats Saints to Wrap Up Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-5-0, 2-5-0 ECAC) beat the St. Lawrence Saints (3-8-1, 1-3-0 ECAC) 2-1 Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium for a weekend split in the final conference games of the calendar year.
"We earned that win and I thought we got contributions throughout the lineup," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We got a goal from Wyatt [Schlaht] who was inserted into the lineup tonight and that's a good thing to see.
"We got some quality minutes out of the third and fourth lines and I didn't think there was any panic. I thought we played a great game and Zacher came up big when we needed him to. We're continuing to grow and get better each game and I think we're getting more confidence. It's just nice for the guys to get a win out of their work. As I tell them, if they work and work good things are going to happen eventually."
The Bears notched the first goal when Ryan St. Louis scored on the power play at 2:31 into the first period. The power play was a result of a tripping call against the Saints. Max Scott and Alex Pineau had the assists on St. Louis' eighth goal of the season.
As the first period came to a close, Wyatt Schlaht gave the Bears their second and final goal of the night with his first career goal. Zackary Tonelli handed the puck off to Noah Wakeford who fed the puck to Schlaht. Schlaht ripped a shot past Saints goaltender Ben Kraws (25 saves) for the eventual game-winner.
The second period was well-fought between the Bears and Saints. The Saints recorded 15 shots on goal while the Bears recorded 12, but both were unable to find the back of the net.
At 8:29 of the third period came the Saints first, and only goal. The power play goal was scored by Tyler Cristall with Mason Waite and Philippe Chapleau picking up the assists. The Saints' power play was a result of a cross-checking call against the Bears.
The Saints' Luc Salem came out of the penalty box straight into a breakaway with the opportunity to tie the game up. Bears goaltender Lawton Zacher came up clutch with the save, and the Bears were victorious.
"We'll enjoy the win, one thing I've always learned as coaches is sometimes you don't always enjoy those moments of team success," Whittet added. "We'll enjoy it and get back after it on Monday."
