#8 Men's Lacrosse Hosts Virginia in NCAA First Round Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The eighth-seeded Brown Bears (10-5, 4-2 Ivy League) host the Virginia Cavaliers (11-3, 5-1 ACC) in the NCAA First Round game Saturday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will broadcast on ESPNU with Drew Carter and Matt Ward on the call.

- The parking lots adjacent to Stevenson-Pincince Field will open to fans at 4:30 p.m.
- Brown enters Saturday with a 10-5 overall record and 4-2 Ivy League mark.
- Brown's offense averages 13.40 goals per game to rank fourth in the Ivy League and tied for 24th in the NCAA. Devon McLane leads the team in goals (46), assists (23), points (69), shots (132), shots on goal (84), and man-up goals (11).
- Ryan Aughavin ranks second on the team with 41 points. His 28 goals are third on the team. Brian Antonelli's 30 goals are good for second on the Bears.
- Brown's man-up offense ranks third in the Ivy League and 10th in the NCAA with 24 goals in 53 attempts (.453).

- Between the pipes, Matthew Nunes holds a .500 save percentage and 11.12 goals against average in 13 starts. His goals against average ranks 25th in the NCAA but his 10.15 saves per game rank 55th in the nation among eligible goalies.
- UVA's man-down defense leads the ACC and ranks 16th in the NCAA with 11 goals against in 36 attempts (.694).
- Petey LaSalla has taken the bulk of the faceoffs for Virginia in 2022. His .614 win-rate (186-303) ranks sixth in the NCAA.
- LaSalla's 6.86 ground balls per game rank 20th in the NCAA. He also has seven goals and nine points this season.
- The stories write themselves as Virginia head coach Lars Tiffany returns to College Hill for just the second time since taking the Cavaliers job following the 2016 season.
- Tiffany was a standout defenseman and two-year captain for the Bears, graduating in 1990 with a concentration in Biology.
- Tiffany was announced as the fifth coach in Brown program history ahead of the 2007 season.
- In 10 seasons at Brown, Tiffany compiled a 95-56 record with four Ivy League titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances. His time at Brown culminated with a Final Four berth in 2016.
- Tiffany returned to College Hill for the first time in March 2020 after his Cavaliers took a home win over the Bears in 2019.
- On Sunday, March 8, the Bears trailed the Cavaliers 8-2 late in the second quarter before Jack Kniffin '20 and Ryan Aughavin scored 22 seconds apart to make it 8-4 at halftime.
- From there, it was all Bruno as the Bears scored five straight to open the third quarter and take a 9-8 lead with 7:35 remaining in the frame.
- Virginia stopped the run and took a 10-9 lead, but three more from Brown made it 12-10.
- After Matt Moore and Dox Aitken scored to tie the game, Colby Gendron and Aughavin sealed the game with goals in the final six minutes.
- Phil Goss '21 recorded 16 saves in the victory. Matthew Gunty went 12-for-20 at the faceoff X.
- Less than a week later, the remainder of the 2020 season was canceled.
- Brown makes its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2016 and 15th trip in program history.
