Second Half Run Lifts Virginia Over #8 Brown in NCAA First Round
5/14/2022 11:56:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The two-time defending National Champion Virginia Cavaliers (12-3) used a second-half run to pull away from the eighth-seeded Brown Bears (10-6) to take a 17-10 win in the First Round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament Saturday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
A capacity crowd of 3,200 spectators were in attendance at Stevenson-Pincince with countless fans watching from outside the fences.
"Nothing but pride and gratitude really," said head coach Mike Daly. "I'm disappointed as heck for our seniors who mean so much to our program and so much to me. They moved this program to where it is.
"I'm grateful for our community showing out like they did tonight, all of our fans, everyone. That's from the top-down; from our President, to our Athletic Director, to the custodial staff in the building, there's nothing but support for everything that we do. We're grateful for that. I thought our kids played their guts out, they did everything we asked them to do, that's all I ever ask."
Virginia jumped to an early lead as Connor Shellenberger struck twice in the opening minutes for a 2-0 advantage. After five minutes of scoreless play, Brown got on the board with three goals in a 4:04 span as Devon McLane, Griffin King, and Ryan Behrens found the back of the net for a 3-2 Bruno lead.
Virginia faceoff specialist Petey LaSalla quickly tied the game again as he struck four seconds after Behrens' tally.
Brian Antonelli pushed his goal streak to 16 as he received a pass from George Pike and beat freshman goalie Matthew Nunes (16 saves) to give the Bears a 4-3 lead through 15 minutes.
The Cavaliers had their first run of the night with three straight goals to open the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead with 7:41 remaining in the half. One minute later, Brown began its second run of the night as Trevor Glavin, Ryan Aughavin, and Reed Moshyedi all scored in a 2:45 span.
Just 19 seconds after Brown re-took the lead at 7-6, Payton Cormier scored his 45th goal of the season to even the score at 7-7 heading into the halftime break.
Virginia struck twice in a 9-second span to begin the third quarter as Shellenberger scored his fourth of the night and Ben Wayer tallied his second of the season off the ensuing faceoff for a 9-7 UVA lead.
Minutes later, the Bears responded with a pair of goals in a 27-second span as Adrian Enchill scored his second pole goal of the season and Nolen Rockefeller buried a feed from Aughavin from distance to even the score at 9-9 with 8:08 remaining in the third quarter.
Enchill's goal came just 10 seconds after Andrew Geppert scooped a ground ball following a caused turnover from Luke Gaydos.
Xander Dickson broke the deadlock with the lone man-up goal of the night with 5:39 remaining and Virginia added three more before the end of the third to take a 13-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
Cormier tallied the first two goals of the fourth quarter to push Virginia's lead to 15-9 with 10:48 to play.
Antonelli tallied his second of the night with 2:30 to play to make it 17-10 Virginia.
