LOWELL, Mass. – The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated UMass Lowell 12-6 Tuesday evening at Cushing Field. The Bears outscored the River Hawks 6-1 during the second half to pull away and claim the victory in their final nonconference game of the season.
"It was a good result in a midweek game," head coach Keely McDonald said. "We are excited now to practice and prepare for this weekend at Harvard."
Claire Jeschke led the Bears with four goals on the night and added three draw controls. Maggie Fowler had three points (2G, A), while Sophia DeRosa (G, A), Alaina Parisella (G, A), Maddie Joyce (G, A), Leah Caputo (G, A), and Mia Mascone (2A) all had two apiece. Emmie Lau posted a game-high seven draws, while Erin Schafer had five.
The Bears dominated in all facets of the game, winning the draw control battle 16-6, putting 22 shots on goal to the River Hawks' 13, and outhustling Lowell in the groundball battle 19-9.
After Brown took an early 2-1 lead, Lowell responded with three straight to lead 4-2 with 10:44 remaining in the second. But the Bears didn't panic and responded with four straight of their own to retake the lead and would eventually go into the half up 6-5.
Erin Tucker and the Bear defense really stepped up in the second half, shutting the River Hawks out in the third quarter and only allowing one goal during the final 30 minutes of action. Tucker made three of her seven saves on the night in the second half.
This was only the second game all season that Mascone, Brown's leading scorer, didn't record a goal, but her assist total increased to seven over the last three games. Her 44 points on the season lead the Bears with Jeschke just behind at 43.
Brown now turns its attention Harvard. The Bears will battle the Crimson this Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. as they try to qualify for the Ivy League Tournament for the first time since the tournament's inception in 2010. Brown will guarantee itself a spot in the field of four with a victory.
