Softball drops two games to Columbia on Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball fell to Columbia in two games on Saturday (April 16). The Bears were held hitless in the second game of the day after falling 6-4 in game one.
GAME 1: COLUMBIA 6, BROWN 4
Brown posted eight hits but could not overcome a four-run deficit, falling in the opening game 6-4. Vanessa Alexander finished the game with two hits and six other Bears each tallied a hit.
The Bears left the bases loaded in the first inning but got on the board in the second. Brianna Rodriguez tripled to leadoff the inning and two batters later, scored on a squeeze play with a bunt by Julia Gubner. Nicole Kim hit a double down the left field line to bring home Laurel Moody, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.
Erin Elgas had kept Columbia off the board until the third inning when back-to-back two-out singles scored a run.
In the fourth, a walk and bunt put two runners on for Columbia. In the next at bat, a sac bunt was laid down and Elgas' throw was wide of first base allowing a run to score. After an out, a ground ball off Elgas' glove resulted in another run coming across.
Brown couldn't get anything going on offense until the sixth inning when Grave Ladd singled to left field to lead off the inning. After a flyout, Rodriguez hit a rocket right back to the pitcher who got her glove up in time to make the catch and double the runner off at first to end the inning.
With one out in the seventh, Columbia loaded the bases and scored its next run on a hit by pitch. After a strikeout, Columbia added two runs on back-to-back singles but Jodie Aguirre, who entered in relief, got out of the inning with the Bears down four.
Brown loaded the bases with one out with singles by Moody, Lauren Innerst and Alexander. A groundout by Meghan Gormley brought the first run of the inning in for Brown and Elayna Tsiouplis singled home another run, cutting the lead to two. With the tying run on base, Ladd flew out to center to end the game.
GAME 2: COLUMBIA 1, BROWN 0
Brown was not able to get anything going against Columbia starter Raquel Reyes, who threw a no-hitter, walking one batter and striking out four. Reyes outdueled Brown starter Aguirre, who threw a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out three.
With two outs in the first, the next four batters for Columbia reached, making the game 1-0 before Aguirre got out of the inning with a flyout. Three of Columbia's five hits came in the first inning.
Aguirre hit a batter in the third and allowed a two-out single but got a strikeout to end the inning. The freshman would not allow another baserunner until the top of the seventh, keeping Brown in the game.
Brown's offense got its first baserunner in the fourth with a leadoff walk by Nicole Kim. Kim stole second and on a groundout for the second out of the inning, moved to third, but was stranded after a strikeout.
Rodriguez reached on a throwing error to start the fifth and stole second but a strikeout, flyout and grounded ended the last threat Brown would pose in the game.
UP NEXT
Brown will be back in action for its final home series of the season with a three-game set against Harvard next weekend. The first day of the series will be on Saturday (April 23) with a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
