PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Behind a complete-game shutout from Erin Elgas, Brown softball earned a 1-0 win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. Brown split the doubleheader with Harvard, falling in game one 2-1.
Laurel Moody hit her team-leading fourth home run during the first game of the doubleheader and finished the day with two hits. Vanessa Alexander also had two hits to lead Brown.
Elgas fired the complete game, scattering eight hits and allowing three walks. In total, Elgas worked out of multiple jams as Harvard stranded 11 runners in game two.
Despite the loss, Lauren Innerst also had an extremely strong performance in the circle in game one. The senior allowed just one earned run in seven innings on two hits. Innerst struck out seven batters but did issue seven walks.
GAME 1: HARVARD 2, BROWN 1
Both teams had chances in the first inning, getting runners in scoring position, but the defenses held up and the game remained scoreless. Brown had another great chance in the third inning, loading the bases with one out but Elayna Tsiouplis' line drive was caught at third base and Moody was doubled off to end the inning.
Harvard turned that into a run in the fourth, earning a two-out bases loaded walk to put the first run on the board.
The Bears answered in the fifth as Laurel Moody hit a home run down the left field line that was just inside the foul pole, tying the game at 1-1.
In the sixth, back-to-back walks started the inning for Harvard and on the next sac bunt, the throw to first was mishandled and the go-ahead run was able cross the plate. The Crimson loaded the bases later in the inning but Innerst got out of the inning, keeping the Bears down one.
Moody walked to start the seventh inning and moved to third on two groundouts but a third ground ball was handled by Harvard's third baseman to end the game.
GAME 2: BROWN 1, HARVARD 0
Elgas battled through some early trouble as Harvard put two runners on in the first and loaded the bases in the second but the junior got through each inning keeping zeros on the scoreboard.
Brown put a runner on in both the first and second but was not able to get anyone past first base. After that, Brown would have six-straight batters retired.
Harvard loaded the bases in the fifth with one out but a hard ground ball to Katie O'Leary at third turned into a double play as O'Leary touched the bag and fired across the diamond to end the inning.
With one out in the fifth, Moody doubled down the line in left as the popup found space between three Harvard defenders. Moe Kastens singled trough the right side moving Moody to third. The throw back into the infield skipped past Harvard's cutoff and it allowed Moody to come across putting the first run of the game on the board.
Elgas worked through the next two innings, stranding two runners in the sixth and one in the seventh to clinch the win for the Bears.
