CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The seventh-ranked Brown Bears hit the Charles River early Saturday morning to take on the eighth-ranked Northeastern Huskies. Brown swept all three races against the Huskies and took a second-place finish against Boston University's 3V8 crew.
With the Varsity 8 win, the Dreissigacker Cup returns to Marston Boathouse. The Bears hold a 35-24 all-time record against Northeastern.
"We had a really strong team performance today and it was exciting to see everyone on the squad contribute to the victories," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "Northeastern has been well-tested already this Spring and they raced well last weekend out West. We expected them to be a tough opponent and they were.
"The crews handled the headwind and the rough water with composure and that was a noticeable improvement," Cooke added.
Brown's 4V8 boat opened the morning against the Boston University 3V8 and 4V8 crews. The Bears posted a time of 6:40.9 to finish second, just three seconds behind the Terrier three boat.
In the Varsity 8 race, Brown edged out Northeastern for a 1.9-second victory after posting a time of 6:12.8. Saturday marked the 19th time a Brown-Northeastern race has been decided by less than two seconds and the 32nd time the crews have finished within five seconds of each other.
Brown's Second Varsity cruised to a time of 6:28.6 for a comfortable win over Northeastern (6:46.7).
In the final race of the morning at 8:20 a.m., Brown's Third Varsity 8 crossed the finish line in 6:48.4 with a large lead over the Husky three boat (7:04.8), and Brown's Fifth Varsity 8 (7:33.4).
