PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 8 Brown men's crew team won the Atalanta Cup today after defeating No. 7 Dartmouth on the Seekonk River. Today also marked Senior Day for the Bears, with several seniors on the Varsity Eight helping guide their crew to victory.Â
"It was a really tight race all the way down the course," David Person said. "It's usually like that between Brown and Dartmouth crews. The training we've done throughout the season really paid off in the second 1,000 and we were able to come out on top."
Coxed by Elenna Seguin and stroked by Tom Griffin, Brown's top boat was locked in a tight race through the first 1,000 meters. With a relatively high rate of striking for both crews, the Bears were able to take a two to three seat lead.Â
Dartmouth began to pull even and slightly ahead at one point after increasing their stroking. Despite this, Brown would retake the lead and eventually grow it to a three seat advantage with 500 meters left. The V8 crossed the finish line in 5:17.13, defeating the Big Green by roughly one second.Â
"Our squad worked hard all week. We know Dartmouth is a tough opponent every year and it's a privilege to be able to host them on our home course," Davis Kelly said. "The preparation this week was really important and helped us work some things out from last weekend at the Princeton Invite."Â
The Second Varsity, coxed by Jack Mershon and stroked by Eddie Andrews, used long, full strokes at the start of their race. There was an equal rate of stroking between the two crews, with Dartmouth leading after the 100 meter mark.
Things were even again around 250 meters, with the Bears jumping ahead by one seat shortly after. The gap between both boats was barely one seat around the halfway point.Â
With 750 meters left, Brown held a slight lead that evaporated around the 1,500 meter mark. Both crews increased their rate of stroking in an effort to make one final push as the Bears crossed the finish line in 5:31.69 and lost by only one second.Â
The Third Varsity, coxed by Rahul Ramakrishnan and stroked by Fraser Burdett, took longer strokes to start and moved at the same pace as Dartmouth. The first half of the race saw the Bears take the lead, with Gordy Gibbons putting down power from the six seat around 1,000 meters.Â
The Bruno Twenty helped the Bears build a three seat lead that eventually increased to a four seat lead at the 1,250 meter mark. Dartmouth made a late push that ultimately closed the gap, but did not propel them in front of the Bears, who crossed the finish line in 5:44.49. Unfortunately, the Bears 3V8 was disqualified after receiving several warnings from the official due to lane violations.Â
The Fourth Varsity, coxed by Adelaide Poulson and stroked by Dom Valt, found themselves in a tight first 100 meters. The middle portion of the race saw both crews lower their rate of stroking while maintaining a strong rhythm.Â
The Bears made a full sprint towards the end of the race to try and close the one length gap separating them from the Big Green. Posting a final time of 5:53.33, the 4V8 finished five seconds behind Dartmouth's 4V8, but ten seconds ahead of Dartmouth's 5V8.Â
The Bears will compete next on May 2, as they head back to New Jersey to face the No. 4 Princeton Tigers.Â
