PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seventh-ranked Brown men's crew hosts the fifth-ranked Dartmouth Big Green in the final home race of the season Saturday (Apr. 23) on the Seekonk River.
Races are set to begin with the 5V8 race at 1:20 p.m. Races will continue every 20 minutes until the Varsity 8 race for the Atalanta Cup at 2:40 p.m.
The Atalanta Cup was dedicated in the 1960s but the Bears and Big Green raced sporadically until Steve Gladstone took the helm of the Brown program in the early 1980s. Brown and Dartmouth have met annually since 1983 with the lone exceptions being 1986, 2020, and 2021.
Saturday's race between Brown and Dartmouth marks the 39th iteration of the Atalanta Cup with the Bears holding a 34-4 record against the Big Green. Dartmouth's last win over Brown came in 2017, a 0.9-second victory on the Connecticut River.
Prior to the 2017 victory, Dartmouth's last win over Brown came in 2003, a 1.7-second win. In the two most recent meetings, Brown captured a 5.6-second win in 2019 and a 6-second win in 2018.
In last weekend's action, Brown took three wins over eighth-ranked Northeastern on the Charles River to take the Dreissigacker Cup. Brown's Varsity 8 crew posted a time of 6:12.8 for a 1.9-second win over the Huskies.
The Big Green most recently competed in Lake Housatonic last Saturday (Apr. 16), falling to top-ranked Yale in four-of-five races. Dartmouth's 4V8 crew took a 4.9-second win over Yale's 4V8.
Brown hits the water next Saturday (Apr. 30) to race against the Princeton Tigers for the Content Cup on Lake Carnegie in a final tune-up before the Eastern Sprints (May 15) and the IRA championships (Jun. 3-5).
