PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The seventh-ranked Brown men's crew team heads to Boston, Massachusetts to race against the eighth-ranked Northeastern Huskies Saturday (Apr. 16) morning on the Charles River.
Saturday's race is set to begin at 6:50 a.m. with the 4V8 race with the Varsity 8 race scheduled for 7:20 a.m. Subsequently, the 2V8 race will take place at 7:50 a.m. and a combined 3V8 and 5V8 race will close out the day at 7:50 a.m. The races will stream on Stretch Internet.
The Bears will actually race against the Boston University 4V8 boat at 6:50 a.m. before taking on the Northeastern Huskies in the remaining races. Saturday's competition is part of the Charles River Racing Series which features men's and women's races from several programs throughout the morning. The Varsity 8 race marks the 57th iteration of the Dreissigacker Cup. Brown holds a 32-24 record and an 11-4 record in the last 15 meetings with the Huskies dating back to 2006.
Brown and Northeastern first raced for the Dreissigacker Cup in 1965 with the Bears taking a half-second victory on the 1.31-mile course.
Surprisingly, the 1965 race is not the closest the crews have come. In 2013, Northeastern edged out Brown by four-tenths of a second on the Seekonk and in 2017, Northeastern took the victory by one-tenth of a second on the Seekonk.
In total, the Brown-Northeastern race has been decided by less than five seconds 31 times, less than two seconds 18 times, and less than one second six times.
Most recently, Brown and Northeastern raced on the Seekonk River last spring with the Huskies sweeping all three races with a 5.78-second win in the 1V8 race.
Brown welcomed Harvard to Providence last Saturday (Apr. 9) to renew the Stein Cup rivalry. The Crimson retained the Cup with the Varsity 8 win while the Bears took the 2V8 victory.
Northeastern most recently competed in the Pac-12 Invitational in Redwood Shores, California last weekend. The Huskies captured an upset victory over eighth-ranked Stanford in the three-day Invitational while falling to second-ranked Washington and third-ranked Cal.
Following the race in Boston, Brown hosts the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday (Apr. 23) on the Seekonk River for the 39th Atalanta Cup race. Races are tentatively scheduled to begin at 1:20 p.m.
