BALTIMORE – Brown softball dropped games against UMBC and Hofstra on Friday. The Bears were shutout by UMBC before falling to Hofstra 9-1 in six innings to close out the day.
The Bears did not manage a baserunner against UMBC in the first game as UMBC starter Courtney Coppersmith struck out 20 of Brown's 21 batters. It was the first time since April 21, 2019 against Penn that Brown did not get a runner on base.
Brown's starter, Alexis Guevara allowed just four hits and the only run scored by the Retrievers came in the fourth inning with a one-out solo home run.
In the second game of the day, Brown was done in by errors in a 9-1 loss to Hofstra. The Bears took an early lead on a double by Brianna Rodriguez. Leah Carey started the game getting hit by a pitch and stole second. Rodriguez doubled to right center field to bring home Carey to put Brown up 1-0.
A single by Alex Guevara followed and moved to second but Brown stranded its two runners without getting another run on the board.
Lauren Innerst only allowed run baserunner in the first two innings but Hofstra broke through in the third. After getting an out, Brown allowed hits during the next two at bats and compounded the problem committing two errors. A walk and single made the game 2-0. The Bears committed two more errors in the next two at bats as Hofstra went up 4-0.
The inning continued with two mire singles and a double before a wild pitch brought in the eighth run of the inning.
Brown got baserunners in the bottom of the fourth and fifth but could not get a runner to second base. In the bottom of the fifth, Hofstra looked like it could end the inning but the runner was thrown out at home on a strong relay from Rodriguez to Julia Gubner to Moe Kastens at the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles started the inning and a fielder's choice moved the runners to second and third. On the next play, the runner beat the throw home on a ground ball to end the game.
