Women's soccer takes care of Columbia at home in shutout victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team defeated Columbia 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field thanks to a goal by Brittany Raphino in the 25th minute.
"Obviously I'm happy we could grit out the win," head coach Kia McNeill said. "But I thought we came out flat in the game. I don't think it was the usual energy and intensity that our team brings to Ivy League games. Any Ivy game is always a battle so I'm happy we could get three points, but I don't think today was our best day of soccer."
The lone goal of the game came in the first half when Evelyn Calhoon took a shot from 30 yards out that deflected off a Columbia defender inside the box. It bounced out to Raphino who, from just outside the 18, sent a left-footed strike bouncing into the bottom right corner just out of reach of the outstretched Lion goalie.
It was a wet and rainy afternoon that seemed to slow down the pace of play. Both teams combined for 14 total shots, 10-4 in favor of Brown, and just five on goal, 3-2 for the Bears.
In the first half, both teams managed just one shot on goal apiece. The Bears' was the Raphino goal, while the Lions' only look on frame during the first 45 came in the 37th minute, but was saved by Bella Schopp.
Schopp made two saves on the afternoon for the Bears, picking up the shutout for her third win of the season.
On the day, Brown earned 11 corners to Columbia's one. It was the second-highest single-game total of the season for the Bears behind only the 13 they created against Central Connecticut.
"Credit to Brittany for taking a half-chance in the first half," McNeill said. "I think we could have capitalized a bit more on some of the corner kicks that we generated, but it's good place to be in to be 2-0 heading into the third week of Ivy play."
The Bears will head to Princeton next week to take on the Tigers on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. in New Jersey.
