PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown women's soccer team dominated Princeton in a 6-1 win Saturday in New Jersey. The Bears' offense exploded as five different players scored a goal.
It was the first time Brown scored six goals in a game since Oct. 30, 2018 in a 6-0 victory over Delaware State.
Brown improves to 8-2-1 and 3-0-0 in Ivy play, while Princeton falls to 7-5-0 and 1-2-0.
"Today was a tremendous performance from our team," head coach Kia McNeill said. "We executed the game plan perfectly and really put it on Princeton early. We set the tone by scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, and never dropping our level of intensity. The fact that we had five different goal scorers today just shows how dangerous our team can be in the final third and I'm proud to walk away with a strong team win."
Evelyn Calhoon got things started in the third minute when she sent a right-footed corner curling into the net. The goal came at the 2:50 mark, the Bears' earliest strike of the season.
In the 11th minute, Naya Cardoza sent a long pass the length of the field to Brittany Raphino who beat both a defender and the goalie to it and scored on a low, hard shot.
Eight minutes later, Brown converted on a corner again. This time, Sheyenne Allen used her left foot to curl it towards goal where Kayla Duran won the battle in the air and sent her header into the back of the net.
Raphino got her second of the first half when she used a brilliant touch just inside the 18-yard box to elude multiple defenders and drilled a shot into the goal. Lucinda Anderson and Kira Maguire assisted on the play.
As time expired in the first half, Maguire made it 5-0 with her third goal of the season from just inside the 18.
The Bears weren't finished there. After several close calls, Ava Seelenfreund got one to go. After receiving a pass from Raphino in the center of the 18, she got a shot off that hit the post. Seelenfreund was there to collect her own rebound and easily deposited it into the back of the net.
The Tigers got one back in the 80th minute, but at that point the game had already been decided.
On the day, shots were relatively even at 14-12 for Brown, but the Bears put 12 on goal to the Tigers' three. Corners were 4-3 in favor of Brown.
In goal, Bella Schopp got the start and made two saves during the first 45 minutes. Clare Gagne subbed in to start the second half.
"We have another battle next week," McNeill said. "But this is certainly a good win to gain confidence and build from."
The Bears now turn their attention to a home matchup with Harvard coming up on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
