Men's Hockey Drops ECAC Conference Matchup at Princeton Friday
1/28/2022 4:18:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior defenseman Samuli Niinisaari scored his first goal of the season to cut into Princeton's lead late in the second period, but the Princeton Tigers (5-11-2, 4-6-1 ECAC) scored four unanswered third period goals to take a 6-1 ECAC conference win over the Brown Bears (4-13-0, 4-8-0 ECAC) Friday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
"We need to play much better hockey in order to be successful," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We found a way to defeat ourselves and what was a 2-1 hockey game by taking ill-advised penalties. We had to address it last weekend and obviously we didn't learn our lesson; we have to make sure we play smart, intelligent, hard-nosed, but, clean hockey. It's a thin, thin line between being successful and not being successful, you cannot beat yourselves, and we beat ourselves this afternoon with bad penalties, giving that team momentum in the third."
Cole Quisenberry nearly broke the deadlock late in the first period, picking up a Princeton defensive zone turnover and hitting the post with a quick shot against Tiger goaltender Jeremie Forget (20 saves).
Princeton sophomore Adam Robbins scored the afternoon's first goal 2:08 into the second period, picking up a loose puck along the left boards before carrying the puck into the slot and beating Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron's (21 saves) blocker.
Spencer Kersten doubled Princeton's lead 11:25 into the middle frame, receiving a pass from Corey Andonovski at the top of the left circle before wiring a snapshot over Caron's blocker. Ian Murphy also assisted on the Tiger goal.
Just over two minutes after Kersten's goal, Niinisaari made it 2-1 Princeton 13:36 into the second. Matt Sutton found Niinisaari with a pass at the point along the right boards before the junior blue liner moved towards the middle of the ice and wired a shot through traffic to beat Forget.
Princeton scored four unanswered goals in the third period to push its lead to 6-1 with goals from Noah de la Durantaye, Andonovski, Mark Paolini, and Robbins. De la Durantaye's goal came 52 seconds into the third on the power play, Andonovski's goal came at 7:04, Paolini's goal came at 11:44, and Robbins' second of the game came at 16:00 of the period.
