
Women's soccer opens season with Hofstra, Holy Cross

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 2019 Ivy League Champion Brown women's soccer team will kick off its 2021 season Friday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. at Hofstra, marking the program's first game in 644 days after the Ivy League did not compete during the 2020 season. The Bears will also host its first home game since 2019 when they welcome Holy Cross to Providence for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Aug. 29.

What to Know About Brown (14-2-3 in 2019):
- Brown's most recent action came in 2019 when the Bears were crowned Ivy League Champions and beat Monmouth in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before eventually falling to No. 1 Florida State.
- Leading scorer and 2019 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Brittany Raphino is back. She scored eight goals and added three assists to lead the Bears with 19 points as a freshman.
- Kayla Thompson returns in goal after being named to the All-Ivy League first team in 2019. That season, she posted the third-best goals against average (.44) and tenth-best save percentage (.892) in program history.Â
- Hofstra is 2-0 on the young 2021 season, having outscored its competition a combined 7-1. The Pride beat Stony Brook 5-1 to open the season before taking down Albany 2-0.
- Lucy Shepard leads the team with seven points from three goals and one assist. Skylar Kuzmich has started both games in goal while posting a .52 goals against average and a .667 save percentage.
- In the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, Hofstra was receiving votes (29).
- On the opposite end of the spectrum, Holy Cross has started 2021 at 0-2. The Crusaders fell to UMass Lowell 2-0 in their season opener and followed it up with a 2-1 loss to Siena.
- Katie Quinn has recorded the lone Holy Cross goal so far and also leads the team with three shots on goal. Tennessee transfer Colleen McIlvenna and Providence transfer Samantha Adams are other names to watch.
- Brown opened its 2019 season with a home game against Hofstra which the Bears won 2-1. Claire Myers registered the game-winner in the 80th minute off an assist from Raphino.
- The Crusaders and Bears last faced off in 2018 with Brown coming out victorious 2-1 in overtime. This time it was Rebecca Rosen in the 96th minute to claim the win.
