HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Brown women's soccer team fell to Hofstra 4-0 in the season opener on Friday afternoon. The Bears start the season at 0-1 while the Pride improve to 3-0.
The Bears struggled to get going early, but started putting passes together late which led to three shots, one on goal, and four corners. Already in its third game of the season, Hofstra's offense clicked early and ended up with 16 shots, five on goal, and four corners.
"Obviously not the way we wanted or expected to the start the season," head coach Kia McNeill said. "Hofstra is a good team who can expose you and punish you for mistakes, and they definitely showed that today. The good thing is we have another game on Sunday to rebound, learn, and move forward from this. With only 10 days to prepare for your first game, there's going to be some growing pains early on that we have to sort through, but the goal is to get better every game. Sunday we will be better."
Hofstra got on the board in the 10th minute when the Brown defense attempted to clear a ball out of the six-yard box, but a deflection off Ellen Halseth found the back of the net. Seven minutes later the Pride would double their lead when Krista Agostinello sent a cross in from the right side that Miri Taylor was able to head home.
The play settled a bit after that and Brown was able to create some chances during remainder of the first half. The Bears earned their first corner of the game in the 32nd minute, but the try sailed over the crossbar. Kayla Thompson made some impressive plays in the first 45, coming off her line to cut off attempted through balls by the Hofstra offense.
The final ten minutes of the first half belonged to Brown as the Bears controlled the ball on the Hofstra side of the field and sent multiple long throws and free kicks into the box, but they just weren't able to finish any off.
The Bears continued to create chances in the second half. In the 56th minute, Brittany Raphino went streaking into the box and got on the end of a cross, but pushed it just wide right. In the 83rd, Ava Seelenfreund sent a shot on goal from a free kick, but the Hofstra keeper was ready.
The Pride added two late goals, in the 64th and 89th minutes, to wrap up the win.
Brown returns to action with the first home game of the season against Holy Cross this Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
