Caron Records Second Straight Shutout as Men's Hockey Beats Dartmouth for Weekend Sweep

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Mathieu Caron posted his second consecutive shutout as the Brown Bears (3-7-0, 3-5-0 ECAC) took a 4-0 win over the Dartmouth Big Green (2-8-0, 2-5-0 ECAC) to complete the weekend sweep Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"I thought we played very good hockey and had a good jump from the get-go," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we were unbelievable through the neutral zone; I don't think Dartmouth had a lot of grade 'A' looks on the goaltender until we put them on the 5-on-3 late in the game. The guys came to play, that was a really important game, we wanted to move up in the standings. Sweeping at home is a good thing for a young team. We learned a lot of things this weekend and a lot of it is positive."
Thomas Manty put the Bears ahead at 6:46 of the opening frame, burying a centering pass from Jake Harris past Dartmouth goaltender Clay Stevenson (26 saves). Lynden Grandberg picked the secondary assist for his first collegiate point.
Caron (28 saves) made a fantastic save moving to his right in the final second of the opening period, turning aside a shot from Braiden Dorfman to preserve the one-goal lead.
Tristan Crozier scored his second goal in as many games 48 seconds into the second, picking up a neutral zone pass from Justin Jallen for a short-handed breakaway. Crozier fired a shot that snuck through Stevenson's five-hole and trickled over the goal line.
Jackson Munro got on the board with his first career goal 2:28 into the second to make it 3-0 Brown. The freshman skated down the left boards and moved the puck to Nathan Plessis at the top of the left circle. Plessis fired a shot off Stevenson's left pad, and Munro was there for the rebound after wheeling around the net.
Maloney added an empty-net goal with 3:18 remaining in the third to make it 4-0 Bears. Jallen picked up his second assist on the goal.
Brown finished the night 6-for-6 on the penalty kill with Caron turning aside seven Big Green shots. That included an extended 5-on-3 situation for Dartmouth late in the third period.

Brown hits the road to take on the 20th-ranked Boston College Eagles (7-5-2, 5-3-1 HEA) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 7) at Conte Forum.

GAME NOTES
- Caron posted back-to-back shutouts, marking the first time a Brown netminder has accomplished the feat since Mike Clemente '12 posted consecutive shutouts on March 6 and 7, 2009 at Harvard in the ECAC First Round Series.
- Brown's weekend sweep marked the first time the Bears have beaten Harvard and Dartmouth on consecutive nights since February 23 and 24, 2018 at Meehan Auditorium.
- The weekend sweep marked Brown's first at Meehan since collecting consecutive wins over Princeton in the 2019 ECAC First Round Series. That team went on to sweep fifth-ranked Quinnipiac on the road the following weekend.
- Crozier's short-handed goal was Brown's first since Trey Dodd '20 scored a man-down goal against Colgate on February 21, 2020, a 3-1 Brown win.
- Jallen connected with Crozier to assist on the captain's goal for the second straight night.
- Maloney scored his second empty-net goal in as many nights against the Big Green. He now has each of the last three empty-net goals scored by the Bears.
- Luke Albert finished the game with a career-high five shots on goal.
