Caron Records Second Straight Shutout as Men's Hockey Beats Dartmouth for Weekend Sweep
12/4/2021 11:27:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Mathieu Caron posted his second consecutive shutout as the Brown Bears (3-7-0, 3-5-0 ECAC) took a 4-0 win over the Dartmouth Big Green (2-8-0, 2-5-0 ECAC) to complete the weekend sweep Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"I thought we played very good hockey and had a good jump from the get-go," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we were unbelievable through the neutral zone; I don't think Dartmouth had a lot of grade 'A' looks on the goaltender until we put them on the 5-on-3 late in the game. The guys came to play, that was a really important game, we wanted to move up in the standings. Sweeping at home is a good thing for a young team. We learned a lot of things this weekend and a lot of it is positive."
Thomas Manty put the Bears ahead at 6:46 of the opening frame, burying a centering pass from Jake Harris past Dartmouth goaltender Clay Stevenson (26 saves). Lynden Grandberg picked the secondary assist for his first collegiate point.
Caron (28 saves) made a fantastic save moving to his right in the final second of the opening period, turning aside a shot from Braiden Dorfman to preserve the one-goal lead.
Tristan Crozier scored his second goal in as many games 48 seconds into the second, picking up a neutral zone pass from Justin Jallen for a short-handed breakaway. Crozier fired a shot that snuck through Stevenson's five-hole and trickled over the goal line.
Jackson Munro got on the board with his first career goal 2:28 into the second to make it 3-0 Brown. The freshman skated down the left boards and moved the puck to Nathan Plessis at the top of the left circle. Plessis fired a shot off Stevenson's left pad, and Munro was there for the rebound after wheeling around the net.
Maloney added an empty-net goal with 3:18 remaining in the third to make it 4-0 Bears. Jallen picked up his second assist on the goal.
Brown finished the night 6-for-6 on the penalty kill with Caron turning aside seven Big Green shots. That included an extended 5-on-3 situation for Dartmouth late in the third period.
