WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross Crusaders (3-11-1, 2-5-1 Atlantic) claimed a 5-1 home win over the Brown Bears (1-6-0, 1-5-0 ECAC) in non-conference action Friday afternoon at Hart Center Rink.
"We're in a funk and we have to find our way out, and the only way to find our way out of it is playing a consistent three periods of hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I know we have a lot of injuries, illness, and players that aren't able to go at this time, but that being said, we just have to find a way to put together a 60-minute effort and it has to start tomorrow, it's a big challenge against Providence College."
The Crusaders jumped to an early lead as Alec Cicero scored 1:34 into the first period. Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (11 saves) made the initial save on a blue line shot from Matt Shatsky, but Cicero was in front to bury the rebound for his second goal of the season.
Holy Cross doubled its lead at 15:32 of the opening period as Anthony Vincent's shot from the top of the left circle was deflected by Nick Hale in front of the net and trickled past Caron.
Grayson Constable made it 3-0 Holy Cross at 9:31 of the second period, burying the loose puck after Mike Higgins' initial shot went wide and deflected off the end board.
The Crusaders added a fourth goal minutes later as Lucas Thorne tallied his fifth goal of the season at 11:47 of the middle period. Luke Kania (7 saves) replaced Caron in net following the goal and Brown timeout.
Cole Quisenberry found the back of the net for his second goal of the season in the waning seconds of the second period. Brett Bliss blasted the initial shot which was saved by Holy Cross goaltender Matt Radomsky (27 saves), and Quisenberry found the loose puck for the rebound goal. Samuli Niinisaari also assisted on the even-strength goal.
Jack Ricketts added an empty-net goal for the Crusaders with 1:06 remaining in the third period to push the score to 5-1.
Brown returns to Meehan Auditorium tomorrow night to host the 14th-ranked Providence College Friars (10-5-0, 6-3-0 HEA) in the annual Mayor's Cup game. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will air on NESN Plus and stream on ESPN+ outside of New England.
