CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown freshman Thomas Manty scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist, but the 15th-ranked Harvard Crimson (5-2-1, 4-1-1 ECAC) skated to a 5-2 victory over the Brown Bears (1-5-0, 1-5-0 ECAC) Tuesday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
"We have to figure out a way to win a game, that being said you always learn something," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "You have to grow as a team, it's still early, we have to find a way to get a little bit better. I thought the game changed quickly when we gave one up at the end of our power play and took a penalty and on the ensuing power play, they scored to turn a 2-1 game into a 4-1 game against a team with that skill level. We have to give ourselves a chance to be successful."
Harvard opened the scoring at the 2:14 mark of the first period as Nick Abruzzese found a loose puck on the right post for a rebound goal. Ryan Siedem and John Farinacci assisted on the goal.
The Crimson doubled the lead at 3:17 of the second period as Alex Laferriere beat a Brown defenseman and beat Brown goaltender Luke Kania (22 saves) all alone in front of the net. Abruzzese and Farinacci assisted on the goal.
Manty carried the puck down the left wing with speed and wired a high short-side shot over the shoulder of Crimson goaltender Mitchell Gibson (18 saves) to cut into Harvard's lead at 5:21 of the second period. Nathan Plessis picked up his first assist of the season on Manty's goal.
Harvard added two goals in a 69-second span to push the score to 4-1 Crimson. Zakary Karpa and Matthew Coronato scored at 8:57 and 10:06 of the second period, respectively.
Laferriere scored his second of the night at 10:54 of the third period with assists from Farinacci and Abruzzese to make it 5-1 Harvard.
Jake Harris scored his first goal of the season at the 15:13 mark of the third period, deflecting a centering pass from Brett Bliss past Gibson. Bliss and Manty assisted on the senior's third period goal.
Mathieu Caron recorded 13 saves in the third period after replacing Kania following the second intermission.
