Men’s Hockey Names Michael Garteig as an Assistant Coach

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Thomas Upton has announced the addition of Michael Garteig as the Bears' new Assistant Coach.
"We are very excited to welcome Michael onto our coaching staff," Upton said. "He has a great history of success and experience in the ECAC as a player. His experience as a professional player over the last decade is something that will immediately impact our goalies and team. Michael's reputation for his competitiveness, work ethic, integrity and professionalism is something that will align perfectly with our new culture and standards at Brown."
Garteig comes to Brown following a 10-year professional playing career that included an NHL entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks and stops throughout North America and Europe. A standout goaltender at Quinnipiac, he competed in the AHL, ECHL, Finland's Liiga, and Germany's DEL before transitioning into coaching, player development, and scouting.
Prior to his professional career, Garteig established himself as one of the top goaltenders in Quinnipiac history. He helped lead the Bobcats to an ECAC Championship in 2016 and two Frozen Four appearances in 2013 and 2016. Garteig earned numerous individual honors including Quinnipiac Male Athlete of the Year, ECAC Third Team All-Star recognition, three Mike Richter Award nominations, and a Hobey Baker Award nomination.
Garteig's junior hockey accomplishments include winning the BCHL Championship, Doyle Cup, and RBC Cup, while being named BCHL Goaltender of the Year twice. In recognition of his lasting impact on the league, the BCHL renamed its annual top goaltender award the Michael Garteig Trophy in 2022.
Garteig earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Quinnipiac University in 2016, before completing a Master of Education in Athletic Administration from Endicott College in 2019.
