HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate scored late in the first period and held on the rest of the way as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the eighth-seeded Raiders, 3-0, in game one of the ECAC First Round series Friday at Class of 1965 Arena.
Brown, the No. 9 seed in the conference tournament, moved to 8-20-2 on the season. Colgate improved to 11-16-8 after taking game one of the best-of-three series.
"I thought we played a pretty good hockey game, we had plenty of chances to score," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We played hard, we played aggressive, we just have to find a way to score. There's a reason why they call it a series. We'll find a way to get one tomorrow and extend it to game three."
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 16 saves in net for the Bears. Mitch Benson stopped all 19 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Senior Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) paced the Bears with three shots.
Jared Cockrell opened the scoring for Colgate at 15:37 in the first period. After a faceoff win in the offensive end, he snapped a one timer past Nieto for the one-goal lead at the first intermission. Brown led in shots, 8-7, after 20 minutes.
The Bears earned the second power play of the game midway through the second period, and generated several offensive chances early in the attempt, but the Colgate defense came up with a trio of blocked shots to keep it a one-goal game.
Brown killed its first penalty of the game early in the third period, but the Raiders capitalized on their second power play at 14:39 of the frame, when Bobby McMann fired a shot that went off the post and into the back of the net.
The Bears managed to kill its third penalty of the period with less than two minutes remaining, and then pulled Nieto for the extra skater, but Ben Sharf netted a quick empty-net goal to secure the win.
Brown and Colgate were even in shots, 19-19.
Brown and Colgate will play game two of the best-of-three series on Saturday at 7 PM.
