Colgate Edges Men’s Hockey in OT, 3-2, to Claim Series

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Rookie Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) evened the score with 1:02 left in regulation to force overtime, but eighth-seeded Colgate's Tyler Penner notched the game winner to top the Brown men's hockey team, 3-2, in game two of the ECAC First Round series Saturday at Class of 1965 Arena.
Colgate (12-16-8) also won the first game of the series on Friday to advance to the ECAC Quarterfinals. Brown, the ninth seed in the tournament, completes its season at 8-21-2.
"The game, the result and series were kind of a microcosm of our whole season," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I thought we played hard, outbattled teams a majority of the year, but just couldn't find a way to get that next goal, extend a lead. We played very good defense, some of the best team defense since I've been here, in terms of our goaltender and team-wise limiting teams offensively, but we have to find a way to get that next goal. I'm going to miss the seniors. They are a good group."
In addition to Krys, fellow rookie defenseman Samuli Niinisaari (Hamina, Finland) also scored for the Bears. Senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 18 saves for the Brown, while Mitch Benson had 32 stops for Colgate. Brown outshot the Raiders, 34-21.
Niinisaari gave the Bears an early lead as he scored his first career goal 18 seconds into the contest. After Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) and Joachim Weberg (Oslo, Norway) dug the puck out along the boards, Niinisaari ripped a shot from the point through traffic and into the back of the net.
Josh McKechney evened the score for the Raiders at 12:45 of the period. Brown was called for a hooking call during the play, and Colgate capitalized with a quick power-play goal, as Griffin Lunn scored 36 seconds later for the one-goal lead.
The Bears held a 12-5 shot advantage in a scoreless middle period. Nieto denied John Snodgrass on a short-handed breakaway during Brown's first power play of the period to keep it a one-goal game.
After Nieto was pulled for the extra skater with 1:43 left in regulation, Krys scored an extra-attacker goal with 1:02 on the clock, as he blasted a shot off the post and past Benson to send the game into overtime. Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and James Crossman (Denver, Colo.) assisted on the play.
The overtime period featured back-to-forth action with chances on both ends of the ice, but the Raiders broke through at 16:05, as Penner scored from the slot to secure the series.
Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) led the Bears with six shots. Brown went 0-for-2 on the power play.
