SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) racked up three hits as the Brown baseball team fell to Presbyterian, 6-3, in Friday afternoon's season opener at Harley Park on the campus of USC-Upstate.
Â
Brown (0-1) and Presbyterian (1-4) kicked off the first game of the USC-Upstate/Wofford Invite in South Carolina. Brown outhit the Blue Hose, 9-8.
Â
"While not the outcome we wanted for our first game, our team played hard and we had them on the ropes several times but couldn't cash in on the opportunities," said head coach Grant Achilles. "Garett settled in and we had good at-bats all day. Wofford will be another good test tomorrow, and we will look to continue improving in all areas."
Â
Lomuscio added an RBI and a run scored as part of his three-hit effort, while Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) and Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) had two hits apiece.
Â
Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) allowed three earned runs with six strikeouts over five innings as the starter. Charlie Beilenson (Los Angeles, Calif.) provided two scoreless innings with three strikeouts out of the bullpen. Eric Miles gave up one earned run over six innings to pick up the win for Presbyterian.
Â
After Presbyterian opened with two runs in the first, the Bears scored one run in the top of the second, as Elliot Ginns (Chevy Chase, Md.) sent home Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) on a groundout. The Blue Hose answered back with two more runs in the bottom half for the early three-run lead.
Â
The Bears cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning, when Lomuscio lead off with a single and then stole second, before Vasquez hit an RBI single to right field.
Â
Brown threatened to even the score in the top of the seventh after Kyle Benson came in from the bullpen to start the inning. Farris and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) drew back-to-back one-out walks and then Lomuscio reached on an error to load the bases, but Benson settled in for the foul out and fielder's choice to escape with the two-run lead.
Â
Presbyterian padded its lead in the eighth, scoring two runs with two outs for the four-run advantage. Brown closed the gap with one run in the ninth, as Farris led off with a triple and Lomuscio hit a one-out RBI double, but Benson secured the final two outs to complete the save.
Â
Brown will continue the four-game weekend with a doubleheader against Wofford on Saturday.
