SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Brown baseball team topped Wofford in the opener, 3-2, before dropping the second game, 12-3, to split Saturday's doubleheader at King Field.
Â
Brown moved to 1-2 overall, while Wofford was handed its first loss, and now stands at 6-1. Â
Â
Game 1: Brown 3, Wofford 2
Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) allowed two runs over five innings for the win, adding three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I.) earned the six-out save. Hayes Heinecke went all seven innings to pick up the loss for the Terriers.
Â
Brown outhit Wofford, 9-7, led by Rich Ciufo (Medford, Mass.) with two hits. Brown had five different players post extra-base hits.
Â
"Collin and Pat were phenomenal, and we had quality at-bats up and down the lineup," said head coach Grant Achilles. "Their starter was very good, but we found a way to push across enough runs against him."
Â
Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) gave the Bears an early one-run lead when he doubled home Ciufo in the first inning. Wofford had two runners on in the third, but Garner forced the two-out flyout preserve the lead.
Â
After Wofford evened the score in the fourth, Brown came right back in the fifth, as Ray Sass (Dunedin, Fla.) and Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) hit back-to-back doubles. The Terriers then answered back in the bottom half with a two-out RBI single to tie the game.
Â
The back-and-forth action continued in the sixth as Elliot Ginns (Chevy Chase, Md.) singled to right before Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in for a pinch-hit RBI double to push the visitors back in front, 3-2.
Â
Petteruti then tossed two hitless innings to secure the six-out save.
Â
Game 2: Wofford 12, Brown 3
Wofford outhit Brown by an 11-7 margin to pave the way to victory in game two, paced by Alec Cargin with five RBIs.
Â
Rookie Bobby Olsen (Powdersville, S.C.) was saddled with the loss as he gave up six runs as the starter, while O'Kelly McWilliams earned the win for Wofford, as he recorded five scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Â
"After an emotional and draining game one, we didn't put together our best game," Achilles said. "There are a lot of takeaways that will help us improve in coming days and weeks."
Â
Rookie catcher Jacob Burley (Hollister, Calif.) headlined the Brown offense as he crushed a two-run homer in his first collegiate at-bat, trimming the deficit two 3-2 in the second inning. Â
Â
