BOSTON – Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) gave the Brown men's hockey team an early lead, but Boston University netted three unanswered goals as the Bears fell in overtime, 3-2, Wednesday night at Agganis Arena.
Brown (3-12-0) outshot the Terriers (7-6-5) by a 28-25 margin.
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped 22 shots for the Bears. Sam Tucker had 26 saves on the other end for the win. Wilmer Skoog scored the game winner at 2:39 in overtime, while David Farrance and Trevor Zegras paced BU with two points apiece.
"We've got to find a way to be just a little bit better," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I told the team, obviously we're disappointed with losing, but not disappointed in the effort, how hard we played, or the positive steps we took today toward being a good program as we enter the second half."
Brown struck first as Giuttari scored just 3:44 into the game. Bradley Cocca (Toronto, Ontario) sent a centering pass from the left side before Giuttari crashed the net and deflected the puck past Tucker for his second of the season.
Jallen added a power-play goal at 14:32, as he snapped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Tucker for his team-high eighth goal of the season, making it a two-goal advantage. Rookies James Crossman (Denver, Colo.) and Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) both assisted on the play.
BU answered back less than a minute later when Zegras scored an extra-attacker goal to make it a one-goal game at the first intermission.
Brown drew consecutive penalties midway through the second period, earning one minute of 5-on-3 play, but the home side kept Brown off the board to keep it a one-goal game. BU then tied the game at 12:05 when Farrance launched a shot that deflected off a Brown skater and into the back of the net.
Brown outshot the Terriers, 15-5, in the second period. The two teams posted nine shots apiece in a scoreless third period to force overtime.
The Bears benefited from a power play 25 seconds into overtime, but the Terriers held the visitors to one shot during the attempt, setting the stage for Skoog's winner in extra time.
Brown went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) paced the lineup with five shots.
Brown will host No. 15 Arizona State in a two-game series this weekend, starting Saturday at 7 PM.
