PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) scored early in the third period to pull the Brown men's hockey team within one goal, but No. 15 Arizona State held on for the win, 3-1, in Saturday's non-conference contest at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (3-13-0) outshot the Sun Devils (12-8-3) by a 35-28 margin.
Senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 25 saves in net, while Evan DeBrouwer stopped 34 shots on the other end for the Sun Devils.
"It's hard to fault the effort and I think we do enough things to win the game," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We can't have those critical moments that basically just give the other team goals, because it is such a thin line of winning and losing."
ASU scored twice within a 55-second span in the opening period to jump out to an early lead. After James Sanchez beat Nieto over the shoulder on the power play, Jarrod Gourley tacked on his first goal of the season at 13:36 for the two-goal advantage at the end of the period.
Brown outshot the Sun Devils by an 11-7 margin in the opening frame, highlighted by four shots during the team's first power play of the game.
After ASU was called for a five-minute major late in the second, the Bears put together a flurry of shots to close out the power play, but DeBrouwer denied all seven bids during the attack to keep the home side off the board.
Beaudoin put the Bears on the board at 4:59 in the third period. After back-to-back shots in front, Beaudoin scored on the team's third attempt for his third of the season, cutting the deficit to one goal. Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) and Samuli Niinisaari (Hamina, Finland) picked up the assists.
Brown pulled Nieto twice during the final 2:15 of play for the extra skater, and was able to generate pressure at the net, but Filips Buncic tacked on the empty netter to secure the win.
Defensemen Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) paced the Bears with six shots.
Brown will host Arizona State in the weekend finale Sunday at 4 PM. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and NESN.
Video of all home contests and most ECAC games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Fans can subscribe and view games by purchasing a monthly package for $4.99 or a yearly package for $49.99.
