Carchio, Myers Propel Women’s Soccer Past Hofstra in Opener, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Abby Carchio netted a goal in the first half, and sophomore Claire Myers scored the game-winning goal in the second half to propel Brown University women's soccer to a 2-1 win over Hofstra University in its season and home opener at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Friday night.
The Bears (1-0-0) took a 1-0 lead just before halftime with a goal in the 45th minute and answered a second-half goal from the Pride (1-2-0) – the two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champions – with the game winner in the 73rd minute.
"We came out with a lot of energy," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "We got a lot of people minutes and probably could have gone even deeper into our bench. We played high tempo and got some good looks on the goal. We didn't finish as many as I thought we could, but the two goals that we scored were very, very good goals. We have a lot to build on."
Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) and Myers (Fairport, N.Y.) each scored her first goal of the season with Carchio tallying her 14th career goal and Myers posting her third career goal.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) registered the assist on the game-winning goal for her first career point, while leading all players with a game-high four shots.
With 55 seconds remaining in the first half, Carchio scored the Bears' first goal of the season, sending a free kick from just outside the penalty area into the left side of the net. Freshman Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) drew the foul that led to the scoring chance.
After Hofstra equalized in the 57th minute, Brown answered with Myers' goal at the 72:02 mark. Raphino catalyzed the play, taking a loose ball from the Bears' defensive third into the attacking third before slotting a through ball to Myers who slotted a shot past the goalkeeper on the counter.
Junior goalkeeper Maria Guerrero Martinez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made one save in the victory (1-0-0).
Hofstra's Sabrina Bryan netted the Pride's goal at 56:06 off an assist from Monique Ianella. After Bryan played a short corner to Ianella, Ianella sent the ball back to Bryan who bent a shot from the right side into the back of the net.
The Bears created multiple scoring in the first half with a shot from freshman Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.) requiring a Pride defender to clear the ball off the line in the 12th minute. A free kick from Carchio ricocheted off the top of the crossbar in the 20th minute, and a header from Raphino went just wide in the 21st minute. Another header from Raphino carried just wide in the early moments of the second half.
For the match, Brown held advantages in shots (13-11) and shots on goal (6-2) while Hofstra led in corner kicks (3-2).
Hofstra net-minder Skylar Kuzmich stopped three shots in the setback (1-2-0).
"Hofstra is a great team and consistently one of the top teams in the CAA every year," McNeill said. "That should be a huge confidence boost for us going forward. It's a quick turnaround, but one of the things working for us this year is that we have a lot of depth. Hopefully we will be able to rotate some numbers into the game a lot more on Sunday."
Next, Brown continues its season-opening weekend with a home match against UMass Lowell on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 11:00 a.m. (ESPN+).
