PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Ava Seelenfreund scored a pair of goals, and senior Celia Story and freshman KK Haug each netted a tally to lead Brown University women's soccer past UMass Lowell, 4-0, on Sunday morning at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Completing their season-opening weekend with their second win in as many outings, the Bears (2-0-0) struck late in the first half and then posted three goals in the second half to gain separation from the visiting River Hawks (0-3-1).
"We started the game a bit slow, and you could see that certain people's legs were a little heavy from having played Friday night," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "The good thing about our team this season is that we have a lot of depth coming off the bench. Our subs who came into the game raised the level and made an impact while they were out there."
Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) scored her first two career goals, converting in the 38th and 49th minutes to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Haug (Minneapolis, Minn.) found the back of the net in the 62nd and 78th minutes respectively to complete the scoring for the hosts. Story tallied her 12th career goal while Haug registered her first collegiate goal.
"It's important to get the freshmen some experience and also still have that leadership on the field," McNeill said. "This year we have a balance of the two, and that should bode really well. For us to get two results this weekend against two very good teams says a lot about this team in general and about the impact we can make going forward."
Juniors Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Star White (Norfolk, Va.) and sophomores Malina Yago (Culver City, Calif.) and Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) each recorded her first assist of the season. White notched her 10th career assist.
Junior goalkeeper Maria Guerrero Martinez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) turned aside a penalty kick in the 35th minute to keep the game scoreless and finished the win (2-0-0) with three saves. Junior goalie Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) closed the game out for the Bears, making one save to secure the combined shutout.
Brown's back line of Cummings, Hinton, junior Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.) and freshman Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.) helped the Bears post their first clean sheet as a team this season. Cummings and Brown have aided the program in recording 12 shutouts since the start of the 2017 season.
With the game scoreless in the 35th minute, Guerrero Martinez kept the River Hawks off the board, diving to her right to deny a penalty kick.
Just over two minutes later, Brown took a 1-0 lead at the 37:04 mark as Cummings played a free kick from 30 yards out into the box where an oncoming Seelenfreund deflected the shot into the back of the net from the edge of the goal area. Cummings posted her second career assist on the play.
Brown doubled its lead to 2-0 early in the second half with Seelenfreund completing her first career brace at 48:23. After stealing the ball in the Bears' attacking half, Seelenfreund carried the ball to the edge of the penalty area and volleyed home a one-timed shot after her initial bid was blocked.
The Bears went ahead 3-0 at the 61:03 mark as Story chipped a shot from just outside the penalty area over the keeper and into the net. Yago started the play with a pass up to White who carried the ball into the attacking third before finding Story in the box. Yago notched her fourth career assist on the play.
Haug closed the scoring at 77:42, receiving a pass from Hinton, dribbling into the penalty area, and sending a shot into the left side netting. Hinton tallied her second collegiate assist with the feed.
For the match, Brown led in shots (17-11), shots on goal (11-4), and corner kicks (4-3). In the second half, the Bears held advantages in shots (11-6) and shots on goal (7-3).
UMass Lowell net-minder Lauren Huff stopped seven shots in the loss (0-3-1).
Next, Brown continues its season-opening homestand with a match against Connecticut on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
