HAMILTON, N.Y. – Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) scored twice and Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 42 saves as the Brown men's hockey team topped Colgate, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Class of 1965 Arena.
Brown (2-2-0, 2-2-0 ECAC) scored three times in the middle period for a three-goal advantage after 40 minutes. Colgate dropped to 2-5-3, 1-1-0.
"Tonight was a gritty win in a place that is notoriously difficult for our program," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "Luke Kania played a great game and allowed our team to find our skating legs. After a first period that we spent chasing Colgate, we played with high compete and high energy in period two and three."
Kania stopped all 23 shots in faced in a scoreless opening period to help pave the way to a win in his first start of the season. Mitch Benson made 12 saves in net for the Raiders, before giving way to Andrew Farrier, who finished with nine stops.
In addition to Jallen, Tristan Crozier (Calgary, Alberta) and Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) also scored for the Bears.
After a scoreless first period, Jallen put the Bears on the board at 11:45 in the second frame, as he followed up a shot from Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) and scored on the rebound.
Crozier netted his first goal of the season at 16:16 in the same period, scoring on a wraparound after a faceoff win in the Brown zone, before Jallen notched his second tally of the game 57 seconds later for three-goal lead.
Tyler Penner scored for the Raiders at 4:24 in the third to trim the lead to two, but Kania kept the home team off the board the rest of the way, and Maloney added an empty netter at 18:12 to secure the win.
Jallen, who has five goals in the last three games, led the Bears with five shots in the game. Both teams went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Brown will host Harvard (11/15) and Dartmouth (11/16) next weekend to kick off a four-game homestand.
