PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) evened the score late in the second period, but No. 13 Harvard responded with three unanswered goals as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Crimson, 4-1, Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moved to 2-3-2 overall and in the ECAC, while Harvard improved to 4-0-0, 4-0-0.
Mitchell Gibson stopped 28 shots for the win. Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 26 saves in net for the Bears. Brown and Harvard scored one power-play goal apiece.
"I thought we were very inconsistent," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "That inconsistency cost us a chance to win the game tonight. We had that urgency as the third period went on, but we just need to make sure we have that at the beginning. We did some good things, so we have to take the positives and build on them."
Brown outshot the Crimson by a 10-7 margin in the opening 20 minutes, but the visitors scored the lone goal of the period, when Henry Bowlby finished a breakaway midway through the frame.
After the Bears killed three penalties to open the second period, Berger capitalized on the team's second power play of the night, when he converted from a tough angle for his second tally of the season. Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) and Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) picked up assists on the play.
Reilly Walsh answered back with a power-play goal with 1:02 left in the period to give the visitors the one-goal lead after 40 minutes.
R.J. Murphy and Casey Dornbach both scored within the opening five minutes of the third period to push Harvard in front, 4-1. The Bears countered with an 11-5 shot advantage midway through the frame, but Gibson preserved the three-goal advantage. Harvard then killed a penalty with five minutes remaining to secure the win.
Harvard had a slight edge in shots, 30-29. Giuttari paced the Bears with five shots.
Brown will host Dartmouth Saturday night at 7 PM.
