ITHACA, N.Y. – Four different players scored for No. 4 Cornell as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Big Red, 4-1, in Friday night's ECAC and Ivy League matchup at Lynah Rink.
Brown moved to 1-2-0 overall and in the conference. Cornell improved to 3-0-0, 1-0-0.
"We battled hard against one of the best teams in the country in one of the hardest road environments that we will play in," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "Cornell is a strong, heavy hockey team, and when we matched their puck intensity we played fairly well. The problem was we were inconsistent throughout the game. Tomorrow is another challenge against a good Colgate team that plays fiercely."
Senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 28 stops in the loss, while Matthew Galajda posted 13 saves for the Big Red. Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) scored the goal for the Bears.
The Bears threatened midway through the opening period when Dorian Dawson (Collingwood, Ontario) rang a shot off the crossbar, followed shortly by a Brown power play, but the home side held strong to keep the game scoreless.
Cornell opened the scoring late in the opening period when Alex Green beat Nieto with a shot from the high slot for the lead at the first intermission.
Brown evened the score at 7:29 in the middle period when Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) took a shot that was blocked and redirected off Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) and into the back of the net. Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) also picked up an assist.
Cornell responded 1:27 later when Sam Malinski put the home team back in front, before Brenden Locke scored with 29 seconds left in the frame, giving the Big Red the two-goal advantage.
The Big Red stretched their lead to three goals when Morgan Barron scored on the power play just 1:02 into the third period. Galajda stopped all five shots he faced in the final period to secure the win.
Beaudoin and rookie Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) paced the Brown lineup with three shots apiece.
The Bears will visit Colgate Saturday afternoon at 4 PM.
