
Men’s Hockey Heads to No. 4 Cornell, Colgate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team will hit the road for the first weekend trip of the season when the Bears take on No. 4 Cornell (11/8) and Colgate (11/9) this weekend. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Brown split a home-and-home series with Yale to open the season, including a 5-1 victory in the home opener, when the Bears scored four power-play goals. Justin Jallen led the way with his first career hat trick, while Bradley Cocca and Chris Berger also scored. Michael Maloney assisted on all three of Jallen's goals for his first career three-assist game. Gavin Nieto earned the win and also stopped 33 shots in a 3-2 loss the previous night for 57 total saves in the two-game span.
Scouting Cornell
No. 4 Cornell (2-0-0) will play its first ECAC games this weekend after the Big Red swept Michigan State on the road to open the season. Cornell scored five power-play goals in the two-game span as eight different players fond the back of the net. Michael Regush leads the team with a pair of goals, and Morgan Barron and Sam Malinski have four points apiece. Matthew Galajda went 2-0-0 in net with a .918 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average. As a team, the Big Red check in at 63.6 percent on the penalty kill. Cornell reached the ECAC championship game last season and then qualified for the NCAA Tournament, falling to Providence in the regional final.

Cornell leads the all-time series with Brown, which began with an 8-2 Brown win on February 21, 1959, by an 80-43-8 margin. Brown went 0-1-1 against the Big Red last regular season and then fell to the Big Red in the ECAC Tournament semifinal.
Scouting Colgate
Colgate (1-4-3) will also kick off ECAC play this weekend and most recently tied Providence, 3-3, on the road. Colgate is averaging 1.50 goals per game and checks in at 3.0 percent on the power play. Paul McAvoy has paced the team to start the season with three goals and five points, while Nick Austin has a team-high four assists. Sophomore Mitch Benson has played every game in net and ranks fourth among league goalies with a 2.32 GAA to go along with a .914 save percentage. Colgate finished tenth in the ECAC standings last season and fell to Union in the opening round of the conference tournament.

Nieto Named ECAC Goalie of the Week
Gavin Nieto was named the ECAC Goalie of the Week after he backstopped the Bears to a split with Yale in the opening week of the season. He led all ECAC goalies with 57 saves over the weekend and posted a .934 save percentage and a 2.03 GAA in the pair of games. This is the second ECAC Goalie of the Week honor for Nieto in his career.
Power Surge
Brown scored four power-play goals in a 5-1 victory over Yale in the home opener, the first with at least four in a game since the 2010-11 season. The Bears added another power-play goal the previous night for five in the first weekend of the season. Brown currently leads the nation on the power play at 55.6 percent.
Jallen Nets First Hat Trick
Justin Jallen scored three times against Yale (11/2) for the first hat trick of his career and the first by a Brown player since the 2017-18 season. He scored twice on the power play and helped the Bears to a 5-1 victory.
Whittet Wins 100
Brown head coach Brendan Whittet earned his 100th career victory when the Bears topped Yale, 5-1, in the home opener. Whittet, earned all of his head coaching wins at Brown, has led the Bears to three ECAC Tournament Final Fours during his tenure in Providence.

After this weekend, Brown will return to Rhode Island for a four-game homestand, starting with Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend. Brown will play five of its opening six games against Ivy League opponents, while the first eight games will all be ECAC contests.
