
Men’s Soccer Falls to Holy Cross in Overtime, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's soccer team fell to Holy Cross, 1-0, in overtime on Tuesday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The teams played to a 0-0 score at the end of regulation in slick conditions. Each team recorded a shot on goal inside the first two minutes of overtime while Holy Cross' (3-11-0) Max Krause ended it with his tally in the 94th minute.
The Bears outshot the Crusaders 16-11 through regulation, including a 5-4 margin in shots on goal. Final shots were 17-13 in favor of Brown. Additionally, the Bears held a 12-2 advantage in corner kick attempts.
After 45 minutes of play, Brown (2-8-2) led 8-5 in shots and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) and junior John Vrablic (Avon, Ohio) each tallied two shots for Brown. Sophomore James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) was only forced to make one routine save in the first half.
Schiller nearly put the Bears up 1-0 in the 58th minute. He blasted a shot from the right side of the box into the near post. Sophomore Malcolm Johnson (Wilmington, Del.) had two follow-up chances on the rebound, but both were blocked by Holy Cross defenders.
Holy Cross earned a dangerous free kick right outside the box in the 65th minute, but the Bears' wall was able to block the shot attempt from Dylan Scanley.
Brown had back-to-back chances in the 87th minute, but Crusaders' goalkeeper Nick Conklu was there to save Rodrigo D'Andrea's (Sao Paulo, Brazil) initial attempt and Derek Waleffe's (Madison, Wis.) rebound chance.
Krause scored the game winner for the Crusaders at 93:34. Rory Birse played an entry pass into the box, which Krause corralled before turning and firing a shot into the lower left corner.
Swomley finished the game with five saves. At the other end, Conklu made six saves and earned a shutout in his first career start for Holy Cross.
Brown will next resume Ivy League play on the road at Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 4:00 p.m.
