ITHACA, N.Y. - The Brown men's soccer team and Cornell fought to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Saturday at Berman Field. Sophomore Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) scored for the Bears while sophomore Max Waldau (Fort Myers, Fla.) made three saves in net.
Both of the game's goals came in the opening half and just over six minutes apart, with Brown (2-8-3, 1-1-2 Ivy League) registering the initial score.
"Tonight was a great Ivy battle," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "The team met the challenge of a very physical game and produced some good moments including what we felt was the game winning goal in overtime. Getting an away Ivy result is a positive."
Brown took a 1-0 lead at 21:33 on Waleffe's second goal of the season. Senior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) found Waleffe at the top of the 18 while senior Jackson Goebel (Houston, Texas) also assisted the score.
Cornell (7-5-1, 1-2-1 Ivy League) tied up the contest 1-1 soon after on a header from John Scearce at 27:34 on a long throw in. The Big Red entered the half with the advantages in shots, 7-2 (3-2 on goal), and corner kicks, 3-0.
Neither team scored in the second frame as shots favored the home team, 6-4 (1-1 on goal) while Brown had the edge in corners, 2-1.
The Bears had some chances late in the second with a free kick at 83:16 and two corners in the 85th and 86th minute but could not find the go-ahead score. Waldau helped send the game into overtime when he punched away a late effort by the Big Red on a corner at 89:29.
Each team recorded a shot in a scoreless first overtime period. A strike from senior Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) almost won it for the Bears at 98:14 but Cornell's Brady McSwain pushed it over the crossbar.
Both teams had chances in the second overtime as Cornell had four corners but the Bears defense was able to fend off any attack and blocked several shots. Waleffe had his header find the back of the net midway through, but it was called back for a foul.
The Big Red outshot the Bears overall, 16-8, with shots on goal even at 4-4. Each team drew three cautions in a physical game. Waldau wrapped up the contest with three saves with his counterpart McSwain also stopping three attempts.
Brown will next close out non-conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at UMass Lowell (7:00 p.m.) before hosting Penn on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
