Etzel Tallies 21st Career Clean Sheet
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel earned her 21st career shutout as Brown University women's soccer blanked the University of Vermont in a 0-0 double overtime draw on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
In the second contest of a four-game home stand, the Bears (2-4-1) controlled play for much of the second half and overtime but could not find the back of the net against the Catamounts (1-4-2).
"We had some good chances in front of goal, and we just need to be more clinical," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "It's tough to walk away with a result like that as we outshot them 17-6, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter if you don't find the back of the net."
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) notched her second shutout of the season in the draw (2-4-1), making two saves. She now has 245 career saves.
Brown's back line of sophomore Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.), senior Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and freshmen Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) and Charlotte DeVaughn (Minneapolis, Minn.) aided in the clean sheet.
The Bears pressured the Catamounts in the second half with freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) sending several threatening balls into the penalty area on a combination of long throw-ins and set pieces. She played in a pair of corner kicks in the 74th and 75th minutes with a shot from freshman Malina Yago (Culver City, Calif.) going wide off the second corner.
In the 89th minute, sophomore Star White (Norfolk, Va.) carried the ball to the edge of the six-yard box before the Vermont defense closed off the attack.
Between the two overtime periods, Brown held a 9-0 advantage in shots, including a 7-0 edge in the second bonus session. In the 109th minute, G'Bye drove a free kick into the box where a header from freshman Rebecca Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) glanced off the right post.
For the match, Brown led 17-6 in shots and allowed Vermont just one shot after halftime.
"All of these games prepare us for the Ivy League – both the good and the bad and the highs and the lows that we go through," McNeill said. "Everything is a learning experience."
Vermont goalkeeper Kacey Lambertson stopped three shots in the tie (1-4-1).
The Bears moved to 13-4-4 at home over their last 21 home matches and to 11-6-4 in the all-time series with Vermont.
Next, Brown concludes its four-game home stand with match-ups on ESPN+ against Rhode Island (Sunday, Sept. 16, 1:00 p.m.) and UMass Lowell (Tuesday, Sept. 18, 7:00 p.m.).
Video of all Brown women's soccer home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
