Three Bears Net First Career Goal, Guerrero Posts Shutout
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Abby Carchio, sophomores Sydney Cummings and Star White, and freshmen Charlotte DeVaughn and Zoe Maxwell all scored goals as Brown University women's soccer defeated the University of Rhode Island, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Five different Bears scored and eight Brown student-athletes registered at least one point as the Bears (3-4-1) shutout their Ocean State rival Rams (0-8-0) in the third contest of a four-game home stand.
"People who have watched the last few games for us have seen the chances that we have created in the final third, and today it was just nice that we were able to put a few away and get some people their first collegiate goal," head coach Kia McNeill said.
Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.), DeVaughn (Minneapolis, Minn.), and Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) each netted her first career goal. Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) netted her third goal of the season – and the sixth of goal of her career – and White (Norolk, Va.) tallied her first goal of the season – the sixth of her career.
Freshmen Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and Claire Myers (Fairport, N.Y.) each posted two assists, marking the first collegiate points for both players. Fellow rookie Malina Yago (Culver City, Calif.) added an assist, her second of the year.
Seeing her first collegiate action, sophomore goalkeeper Maria Guerrero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made three saves in the shutout win (1-0-0).
Brown's starting back line of Cummings, DeVaughn, senior Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and freshman Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) helped the Bears post their third clean sheet as a team this season.
The Bears scored five goals in a game for the first time since a 5-1 win over Francis Marion on Oct. 12, 2011. Brown gained a five-goal advantage in a game for the first time since a 5-0 win over Sacred Heart on Oct. 15, 2008.
Cummings started the game's scoring in the 34th minute as G'Bye served a corner kick from the left side into the goal area where a waiting Cummings headed the ball into the back of the net at the 33:39 mark.
DeVaughn extended Brown's lead to 2-0 in the 40th minute on another header goal. G'Bye sent a long ball in from the left side allowing DeVaughn to run onto the ball and chip a header over the goalkeeper.
The Bears went ahead 3-0 early in the second half as White carried the ball to the right side of the penalty area and bent a shot inside the left post in the 48th minute. Yago and Myers both aided in the buildup to the goal.
In the 52nd minute, Carchio staked Brown to a 4-0 lead as she collected a loose ball at the top of the box and drove a shot into the goal at 51:56.
Maxwell concluded the game's scoring in the 59th minute as she received a pass in the box from Myers, worked around a defender, and fired a shot into the goal. Her goal at 58:44 closed a stretch of three goals in 11 minutes for the Bears.
Brown controlled play throughout the match, holding advantages in shots (19-4), shots on goal (13-3), and corner kicks (9-3). The Bears set a season high with 13 shots on goal.
URI goalkeeper Haley Brennan made five saves in the first half in the loss (0-5-0). Julia Freeman stopped three shots in the second half.
Next, Brown concludes its four-game home stand against UMass Lowell on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
