Myers Nets Game-Winning Goal on First Collegiate Goal
PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshmen Rebecca Rosen and Claire Myers and sophomore Star White each scored a goal as Brown University women's soccer rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Princeton University, 3-2, on Saturday evening at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Trailing 2-0 late in the first half, the Bears (5-6-1, 1-2-0 Ivy) scored in the 42nd minute before netting goals in the second half in the 50th and 79th minutes to storm past the host Tigers (7-3-2, 1-1-1 Ivy) – the defending Ivy League champions.
Scoring her first collegiate goal, Myers netted the game-winning goal in the 79th minute.
Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) brought Brown within 2-1 in the 42nd minute with her third goal of the year. White (Norfolk, Va.) evened the score at 2-2 in the 50th minute behind her second goal of the season and the seventh of her career, neutralizing the Tigers' goals from the 13th and 17th minutes.
Freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) posted her fifth assist of the season, ranking second in the Ivy League, while junior Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) registered her second assist of the season and stands second in the conference with 12 points on the year. Freshman Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) recorded her first career assist.
Brown sophomore goalkeeper Maria Guerrero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made five saves, including four stops in the second half.
Myers gave Brown a 3-2 lead in the 79th minute, directing a one-timed shot inside the left post at 78:29. After Carchio played a long ball up the field, White kept the play alive inside the penalty area allowing Myers to send the ball into the goal.
The Bears knotted the score at 2-2 in the 50th minute as Carchio played a free kick from the left side into the goal area where an oncoming White knocked the ball into the net at the 49:00 mark.
Rosen brought Brown within 2-1 in the 42nd minute as she drove a shot into the right side of the goal from outside the penalty area. G'Bye began the play, sending a cross in from the left side before Hinton chested the ball down for Rosen to score at the 41:59 mark.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute off a Brown own goal. The hosts extended their edge to 2-0 in the 17th minute as Mimi Asom netted her 10th goal of the season, turning and finding the back of the net from inside the 18-yard box at 16:21 – less than four minutes after the team's first goal at 12:49.
In the first half, Brown threatened before Rosen's goal as Carchio played a free kick into the mixer in the 15th minute, Myers sent in a dangerous cross in the 22nd minute, and G'Bye and Rosen combined for a series of threats in the 27th minute.
In the second half, Guerrero extended over her head to make a save in the 60th minute. Brown nearly gained the lead on multiple occasions prior to Myers' goal as sophomore Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) served dangerous free kicks in the 67th and 75th minutes, and White drove a cross into the penalty area in the 70th minute.
For the match, Princeton led in shots (19-6), shots on goal (7-4), and corner kicks (6-3). Princeton goalie Nicole Grossi turned aside one shot.
The Bears have now won back-to-back road games at Princeton for the first time since claiming road wins against the Tigers in 1992 and 1994. Brown improved to 19-18-4 all-time against Princeton.
