PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Brown field hockey team scored all of its goals in the first half to defeat Villanova 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Field Hockey Field. The Bears scored two goals off of penalty corners and converted on a penalty stroke.
"We played our game today!" said head coach Jill Reeve. "On attack we were able to string together passes and build threatening plays and our defense played solid. Playing back-to-back games is tough and we battled for this win. It was a team effort."
Brown (7-9) capitalized on its first penalty corner of the day when freshman Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) received the ball at the top of the arc from senior Maddie Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) and found junior Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) in front for her team-leading eighth goal of the year at 7:54.
The Bears made it two in-a-row off penalty corners when sophomore Anagha Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.) dove and deflected in a strike from senior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.) at 12:57.
Villanova (9-9) later pulled within one at 28:20 with a tally from Lydia Sydnor.
Brown regained its two-goal cushion after it was awarded a penalty stroke at 31:55 where junior Ali Dunning (Amersham, England) put in the score on her second penalty stroke of the year.
Â
Senior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) ended the opening stanza with seven saves. Villanova had the advantage in both corners (8-2) and shots (10-3) in the first.
The Bears' defense held off the Wildcats in the second, with Hammaker adding six saves in the scoreless period. Villanova again held the shot lead at 9-5 in the second and had the edge in corners at 8-2.
Hammaker concluded the contest with 13 saves, her fourth double digit effort of the season, while Erika Miller made two saves in a second half of action for the Wildcats. Hammaker now has sole possession of third all-time in saves at Brown with 462 career stops, passing Meg Stewart '82.
Â
Brown will next close out the regular season by hosting Yale at Goldberger Family Field on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN+. Senior day ceremonies will be held prior to the game.Â
