PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team was edged by Yale, 3-2, in its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears received goals from senior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H) and sophomore Lexi King (Granby, Conn.) in the contest.
"We played hard today and had our chances," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I was proud of our effort."
Prior to the start of the game, Lanouette, Maddie Ayles (Westwood, Mass.), Ellie Seid (Larchmont, N.Y.), Carly Kabelac (Potomac, Md.) and Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) were honored for their contributions over four seasons.
Yale (10-7, 4-3 Ivy League) opened the scoring on the afternoon when Camille Scheyer netted a goal at 4:48 for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. Lanouette tied it up at 12:42 when she converted on a textbook penalty corner, with Ayles and junior Hannah Leckey (Madison, Conn.) assisting the goal.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into the break when Holly Jackson scored at 15:15. Yale outshot Brown 8-2 in the first stanza and had a 4-1 advantage in corners.
Brown (7-10, 1-6 Ivy League) again fought back and tied the game with King scoring her first goal of the season off a rebound at 56:38 in the second half.
It looked as if the contest would head into overtime but Scheyer recorded her second tally of the day at 68:35 to give the Bulldogs the victory.
After the Bears were outshot in the first half, the team turned the table and held an 8-5 advantage for the second and also led in corners, 3-1.
Hammaker finished the afternoon with five saves. Saturday's game moved her into a tie with Shannon McSweeney '15 for first all-time at Brown in games played with 68. She also ends her career third in saves (466), sixth in wins (22) and ninth in shutouts (5).
Leckey added a defensive save for the Bears in the contest, her sixth of the year, to rank first all-time for a season at Brown. She now has 10 career defensive saves, making her Brown's all-time leader.
