PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - An early first-half score by Penn proved to be the game winner as the Brown field hockey team was edged by the Quakers, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field.
The Bears' (6-9, 1-5 Ivy League) defense played well in the contest, defending off 15 penalty corners. Junior Hannah Leckey (Madison, Conn.) recorded a defensive save while senior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) tied her career-high with 14 saves. Hammaker's 14 saves brings her career total to 449, one shy of tying her for third all-time at Brown with Meg Stewart '82.
"We started slow against a tough team and Penn was able to capitalize early," said head coach Jill Reeve. "Our defensive fortitude was tested today and Katie Hammaker and Ali Dunning came up big defensively."
Penn (9-7, 5-1 Ivy League) gained a 1-0 lead in the opening half with a goal from Rachel Mirkin at 3:09 following two Quaker shots and a defensive save from Leckey.
Hammaker made seven saves in the first period while she faced seven Penn penalty corners.
Both teams played through a scoreless second half, where Hammaker added eight saves. Penn registered eight more corners in the period while Brown obtained its lone chance in the frame.
In addition to Hammaker moving up in the Brown record book, Leckey's defensive save was the sixth of her career, tying her for fifth all-time with Laura Kavazanjian '06 and teammate Maddie Ayles (Westwood, Mass.).
Brown quickly returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 28, playing at Villanova for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
