STORRS, Conn. - The Brown field hockey team (0-2) concluded its opening weekend of the 2025 season with a 3-2 loss at No. 11 UConn (2-1).
"Both games against ranked opportunities we could've turned into wins," head coach Britt Broady said. "We out-shot and out-cornered both teams, and we're proud of the way we performed overall."
The Bears earned their first penalty corner chance 26 seconds into the contest. After Lexi Pellegrino's shot was stopped by UConn goalkeeper Natalie McKenna, the ball found the stick of Lucy Adams as she was able to tap the ball over the goal line to give Brown an early 1-0 advantage. Juliette Meijaard was credited with an assist on Adams' goal.
The Huskies were able to tie the game with 3:38 remaining in the opening quarter as the teams entered the second stanza knotted at one.
"I'm really proud of the teams effort today,"Â Adams said. "We came out strong against a great opponent, scoring in the first few minutes of the game. I think we can feel excited about how we competed today while also recognizing some key areas for growth to focus on. Moving forward, we want to keep bringing the same energy, but pair it with discipline that comes from having a few games under our belt."
UConn took a 2-1 lead 6:44 into the second on a goal from Emma Larit. The Huskies were able to double their lead to 3-1 1:52 later on a goal from Lene Bujes.
After UConn took a 3-1 lead, Brown answered with three total shots, including two on goal. They also generated their second penalty corner chance of the first half, but they were unable to convert as UConn took a 3-1 lead into the halftime intermission.Â
In the third quarter, Brown out-shot UConn 2-1, UConn's one shot of the frame was stopped by Ellie Parker, it was Parker's first save of the afternoon. The freshman goalkeeper finished with two saves in her second collegiate start.Â
The Bears cut into the Huskies' lead midway through the fourth as Kate Siedam scored her first goal of the season off of a penalty corner chance. After cutting the UConn lead in half, Brown took to the offensive as Lucy Adams had a chance to tie the game at three with less than five minutes remaining but her shot was denied by McKenna. Brown's best opportunity came with 38 seconds remaining as Grace Almeida found herself in front of the net with a chance to tie the game but McKenna pushed her shot aside.Â
The Bears were unable to generate another chance as the Huskies claimed the victory. Brown out-shot UConn 12-9 (10-5 on goal) and earned four penalty corner opportunities while holding UConn to two.
"Winning teams execute in crucial moments," Broady added. "That will be our focus in training this week."
Brown will begin a three-game home stand beginning with its home opener against Fairfield on Sunday. Sept. 14 at 12 p.m.
