AMHERST, Mass. - The Brown field hockey team battled No. 14 UMass to a shootout, but ultimately fell short in a 3-2 season-opening defeat on Friday evening at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
"I am very proud of our performance today," head coach Britt Broady said. "We left everything on the field through double overtime and a shootout. It hurts to not come out with the win, this performance showed exactly who we are, which is a relentless, invested group that is together through everything."
The Bears came out on the attack to open the game, they tallied four total shots (three on goal) and generated three penalty corner opportunities. Defensively, the Bears didn't allow a single shot from the Minutewomen in the first quarter.
UMass broke the scoreless stalemate 5:08 into the second quarter. Brown leveled the score at one with 1:44 remaining in the first half. Brown's first goal of the season was scored by Kiersten Smith, Smith's goal was assisted by Alexandra Madrid.Â
The Bears out shot the Minutewomen 8-6 in the first half and generated five penalty corners while holding UMass to three. In the first half of her career, freshman goalkeeper Ellie Parker stopped four shots in the first half.
Brown took a 2-1 lead 2:24 into the second half as Mia Karine Myklebust gave the Bears a 2-1 advantage. Myklebust's goal was the lone shot for the Bears in the third quarter.Â
Holding onto a 2-1 lead entering the fourth, Parker made two saves early in the frame to keep the Bears in front. The Minutewomen found the back of the net with 6:47 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at two.
Following the goal from UMass, Brown had three penalty corner opportunities and three shots, but were unable to find the back of the net as the two teams headed to overtime. Overall, Brown had six penalty corner chances in the fourth stanza, along with five shots.Â
In the two overtime periods, both teams had a number of chances to win the game, but neither team could find the back of the net. Parker stopped two shots in the second overtime period, including clearing the ball off the goal line late in the second overtime to keep the game deadlocked at two.
In the shootout, Lucy Adams was the only Bear to find the back of the net, Parker stopped one shot in the shootout as UMass earned the win.
As a team, Brown launched 18 shots (11 on goal) and concluded the game with 13 penalty corner opportunities.
"This is a great first game for an exciting season ahead," Broady added. "Ellie Parker was outstanding in goal." The freshman finished with nine saves in her collegiate debut.
Brown will take on its second-straight ranked opponent on Sunday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on No. 11 UConn at 1 p.m.
