PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (11-18, 4-7 Ivy) split its doubleheader with Harvard (15-15-1, 7-4 Ivy) on Saturday (April 11) at the Brown Softball Field.
The Bears took game one behind a shutout performance from Macy Borowski, winning 4-0. Brown fell in game two 5-1 as the Bears were held to just two hits.
GAME ONE: Brown 4, Harvard 0
Macy Borowski tossed a complete game shutout, working around seven hits and two walks, while recording seven strikeouts. It was Borowski's second shutout and 12th complete game of the season.
Abby Bettencourt hit her second home run of the season and four other Bears picked up hits.
Borowski loaded the bases in the first inning but got a flyout to center field to keep Harvard off the board.
In the bottom of the inning, Bettencourt delivered with a two-out solo home run to center field to put the Bears up 1-0. The inning continued with singles by Borowski and Cameron Zytkewicz Ray to put runners at first and second. With Torii Ramirez running at second, Maggie Foxx singled to right and scored Ramirez, doubling Brown's lead.
Harvard put another runner on third in the second but a strikeout from Borowski ended the threat.
A one-out walk by Jasmine Hsiao started another scoring chance for Brown. Hsiao then moved to second on a groundout by Amanda Deng. Alyssa Villarde singled to right to score Hsiao before being thrown out at second to end the inning with Brown up 3-0.
Brown took advantage of three Harvard errors in the fourth with Bettencourt reaching on a throwing error and moving to second on another throwing error on a pickoff attempt. With one out, and runners on first and second, Harvard got a ground ball from Foxx. The Crimson tried to turn two but the throw to first was off target and allowed Bettencourt to score for the final run of the game.
Harvard would get runners into scoring position in two more innings but Borowski got out of each threat unscathed to close out the win.
GAME TWO: Harvard 5, Brown 1
Brown fell in an early hole and could not complete a comeback, finishing with just two hits in the loss in game two.
Harvard scored two in the first off Brown starter Edie Cobb, who dealt with trouble for most of the game, but surrendered just three more runs, with one in the third, one in the fourth and one in the seventh.
The Bears offense got just one runner in scoring position until the fifth inning. Both Elli Thompson and Hsiao were hit by pitches with two outs before Deng singled to right, scoring Thompson, and making it 4-1. Reagan Crosthwaite then stepped to the plate and hit a line drive that was just foul before striking out to end Brown's last threat.
